Setting Rules and Boundaries for Your Puppy

Setting Rules and Boundaries for Your Puppy

Everyone in your family, including dogs, has to have rules and boundaries in the house. You should start teaching the puppy rules and boundaries as soon as you bring them home. Giving a puppy too much freedom and the ability to do anything it wants, is a recipe for disaster.

Setting Rules

Rules refer to what a puppy is and isn’t allowed to do.  Here are some examples:

  • No jumping on furniture when not invited
  • No pulling on the leash when walking
  • No jumping on guests when they are greeted
  • No “zoomies” in the house (outside in the yard is OK)

Setting Boundaries

Boundaries control where a dog can and can’t go, claiming territory, and teaching your puppy what is and isn’t theirs. Here are some examples:

  • Not allowed in certain rooms of the house
  • Sit and wait to go out the door
  • Sit and wait for their food
  • Go to bed, or place, when family is eating (instead of begging)
